HEG Prefrontal Training

Targeted executive-function training for focus, regulation, and follow-through

HEG (hemoencephalography) is a form of neurofeedback that focuses specifically on the prefrontal cortex — the part of the brain responsible for focus, emotional regulation, decision-making, and self-control.

At Breakthrough Neurofeedback, HEG may be used as a focused starting point or layered alongside neurofeedback to strengthen executive function and regulation.

What Is HEG and Why the Prefrontal Cortex Matters

HEG measures and trains blood flow and activation in the prefrontal cortex, which plays a central role in:

  • Focus and sustained attention
  • Emotional regulation
  • Planning and organization
  • Impulse control and decision‑making

Healthy executive function requires two abilities:

  • Turning on when it’s time to focus or perform
  • Turning down when it’s time to shift, rest, or recover

When this area struggles to regulate well, it can show up as:

  • Difficulty focusing or  following through
  • Emotional reactivity or shutdowns
  • Getting stuck in worry or overthinking
  • Executive function challenges in adults or kids
  • Brain fog and frontal fatigue after long mental days

Our protocols focus on balanced activation and regulation so focus improves without pushing the nervous system into overstimulation.

How HEG Training Works

During HEG training:

  • A small sensor sits on your forehead (no paste, no pain).
  • You watch a simple visual or game.
  • As blood flow and activation in your prefrontal cortex change, the game responds and gives your brain real‑time feedback.

This allows the brain to practice two core skills:

  • Healthy activation:
Engaging and sustaining focus when needed.
  • Healthy regulation:
Letting effort go and settling once the task is complete.

Sessions are short, gentle, and kid-friendly.

Who HEG Is a Good Fit For

HEG may be helpful for people experiencing:

  • ADHD and attention challenges
  • Executive-function difficulties (planning, organization, follow-through)
  • Emotional regulation struggles
  • Impulsivity or “short-fuse” reactions
  • Brain fog and frontal fatigue
  • Difficulty winding down after mentally demanding days

It can also be a good option for people who want a lighter, more targeted starting point before broader neurofeedback work.

HEG may be used:

  • On its own as focused executive-function training
  • Alongside neurofeedback to strengthen prefrontal regulation
  • As ongoing support for focus and emotional steadiness

Frequently Asked Questions

Is HEG safe for kids and teens?

Yes, when used correctly. HEG is non‑invasive, uses no electricity into the brain, and sessions are short and gentle. We adjust protocols based on age, history, and sensitivity, and give parents clear guidance for at‑home use.

Will HEG make me (or my child) feel wired or overstimulated?

The way we use HEG, the goal is balanced activation and regulation, not “more activation at all costs.” If someone feels overstimulated, we adjust frequency, duration, and protocols so training feels productive, not overwhelming.

How long before we notice changes with HEG?

Many people notice shifts in focus, frustration tolerance, or “mental stamina” within the first few weeks, especially when training consistently. Deeper executive‑function changes tend to build over 6–12 weeks of regular use.

Can HEG replace neurofeedback?

For some people whose main issue is focus and follow‑through, HEG‑only can be a very effective starting point. For more complex patterns (sleep, mood, trauma, brain fog), the best results usually come from both: neurofeedback for whole‑brain regulation plus HEG for targeted prefrontal strength.
